Chapter 71: Bystander

Keith Shadis tells Eren, Hange and Levi's squad what he knows about Grisha Yeager, whom he found some twenty years earlier wandering outside Wall Maria with no memory of his past. He recounts how Grisha cured an epidemic in Shiganshina and married Carla, while he himself failed as Survey Corps commander until handing the post to Erwin. On the day Wall Maria fell he saw Grisha take Eren into the forest and, after the flash of a transformation, found only the unconscious boy. Shadis admits he sabotaged Eren's gear during the balance test to stop him from enlisting, and passes on Carla's words.
